Research on an Eastern historical event and Eastern pop culture references
Oiran (花魁) in the Yoshiwara yuukaku (吉原遊廓)
Yoshiwara yuukaku was a famous district that has a government-confirmed block for sex workers.
The word oiran comes from shortening the sentence “Oira no Tokoro no nee-san” (おいらの所の姉さん). It roughly translates to “the older sisters of our place.” Eventually, the word became fixed to refer to the highest-ranked sex workers in Yoshiwara yuukaku.
Oiran worked at the Yoshiwara yuukaku but did not sit in a harimise (張り見世). A harimise is a type of brothel where the sex workers would line up behind bars, and customers would choose which sex worker, or yuujyo, (遊女) they want.
To call an oiran, the customer must use a tea house, chaya, (茶屋) as a mediator and When an oiran were called for service, she would walk with her Kamuro (禿) and Shinzo (新造).
To receive the service of the oiran, the customer had to meet her at least 3 times.
- For the first time, the oiran would sit far away from the customer, and did not eat, drink or talk with him. He would be called a Shokai means first meeting.
- For the second meeting, the oiran would sit a little closer to the customer and talk more. The customer would be called Uraokaesu or Ura
- For the third meeting, the oiran would do her service.
At the third meeting, the customer would become a najimi (馴染み), meaning a familiar customer. The customer would have a tray and a pair of chopsticks with his name on them. They had to pay a najimikin (馴染み金), or money for oiran’s service. And at this stage, the customer cannot receive any service from other oiran unless he would get a punishment called kamikiri (髪切り). In which he would be dragged to the oiran he becomes najimi with and forced to apologize to her and other oiran he asked for service. After that, he would be shaved off his hair and expelled from the Yoshiwara yuukaku.
At first, I’m thinking of make threatening meme representing the oiran warning her najimi to not go to other najimi.
so, these are the western references I’ve researched.
Then, trying to develop the meme into something more understandable. I want to make a meme portray how hard it would be to get an oiran’s service
It came out in the form of stairs or steps
And here are the outcomes combining steps to get oiran’s service and the prohibition to get other oiran’s service together
